Chapter Eight

“You’re leaving?” Since Amanda had left the door to Ellie’s room open, George walked straight in.

Amanda looked up from her case. “Yes, and thanks for putting me up all this time. I really appreciate it.”

“Where are you moving?”

She refused to look away. “I’m moving in with Thierry and Harlen Goldclaw.”

He swallowed, and his eyes, so much like hers, widened. “You’re kidding me!”

“No. I decided to live a little.” Harlen had warned her not to tell anyone they were breedmates, not yet. They hadn’t bonded, he said. He’d been reluctant to let her come here on her own, but she said she’d rather talk to her brother by herself.

Thierry was out of the office again today. How would he take the news now it was a done thing? She had that to find out, but this was the hardest. Now she knew George’s views, he might not want to talk to her anymore.

She folded the last T-shirt and tucked it away. “I’m sorry, George. It just happened.”

“I see.” He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall. “I wanted you to stay longer. Let us get to know each other.”

“We’ll still be in the same city. We should make a date. Dinner on Tuesdays or something.”

“We should. You have your phone. I’ll take it personally if you don’t drop by at least once a week.” He came into the room and took her by the shoulders. “I’m as alone as you. You’re my only relative. We might not agree on everything, but we’re kin. I’m always there for you, Amanda. Always.”

Tears sprang to her eyes, and she hugged him tight, his powerful cologne notwithstanding. “I’ll help you if I can.”

“Take care,” he murmured. “I mean that.”

She pulled away. “I know you do.”

She didn’t tell him that she had fallen for her breedmates in a big way. How or when it had happened she wasn’t sure, but there it was. Cradled in Harlen’s arms that afternoon, she had come to several conclusions about herself. Firstly, she was hopelessly in love with these two powerful men. How and why she wasn’t sure. Maybe she was in lust. Maybe the feeling would wear off, but deep down she didn’t think so. A certainty had taken hold of her, one that would last.

They treated her with careless affection, accepted her as their breedmate, but what else? Neither man had professed undying love to her. They had accepted her. She would have to work from that.

Recalling that, she faced George, her brother and her friend. “If I wanted to come back, could I?”

“Always.”

Ellie was working, but Barbara was there when Harlen arrived to pick her up. She embraced Amanda warmly. “We’ll miss you.”

“I’m not sure Ellie will. She gets her room back, at any rate.” Ellie had to climb over Amanda’s little bed to get to the bathroom in the mornings. Amanda had woken up more than once to cursing when Ellie stubbed her toe.

“She’ll miss you, too,” Barbara said. “It’s been great.
